Endurance flying vice Enduro biking

My timing is off again! There I was all signed up and ready for Reach The Beach race on Sunday, with days off booked starting friday morning and through to monday for good measure, but ...

Thursday night I got the call that our Squadron needed to deploy a SAR Hercules and crew up to Whitehorse to help continue a week plus ongoing search for a small civilian aircraft with two persons on board that was missing on a flight from Anchorage, Alaska to Whitehorse (http://www.cbc.ca/canada/north/story/2009/07/02/yukon-missing-plane.html). So I'm up here now and not sure how much longer I will be doing endurance flying vice biking.

So ... no RTB and there officially goes my MUERTO competing plans for this year . Oh well, there's still more enduros to come, including the XC8 in Sask.

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Seasonal Disappointment - Acceptance

I type this after sleeping most of the day ... home, sick and disappointed at missing some great flying planned for today and trying to accept that I must miss another Wed Night Race ... whine whine whine !

The dictionary defines disappointment as:
1. to fail to fulfill the expectations or wishes of; or
2. to defeat the fulfillment of (hopes, plans, etc.); thwart; frustrate.

That's how I feel about this late spring/early summer season of biking. Expectations, wishes, hopes and plans appearing to be thwarted! I got in lots of good biking this winter/early spring and enjoyed a sweet adventure trip to Moab with Lori as well. But, since April, substantial biking has been sparse due to my work schedule and time away from home.

I am most disappointed that I have not had the time to increase the length of my training rides consistently. My racing plans for this season were scaled back from last years over-optimistic and thwarted hopes of racing in most everything! So, this year the racing focus (other than some WNRs) was/is to work on endurance and take part in the MUERTO experiment by racing 4 to 5 of the enduros (yes I do like to compete!). I have already had to miss the great Back 40 enduro race and now it looks like I will have to be away when the Birch Fall Classic Marathon happens in Sept. ... baahh!

I love my job, but it has been getting in the way of some of my biking fun ... I know ... whine whine whine ... but I coordinated a detailed leave plan at work to allow for these events, but so far it has been thwarted!

Wow ... feels good to get that out of my system ... whining or not! I know I must move on to acceptance. I will make the best of it, enjoy as much biking as I can (with family and friends) and still race as much as I can ... all the while accepting that competing is just a motivator for me anyways !

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

kudos to ...

Hey everyone! Congrats to the relay team!

I also wanted to congratulate Scott, my most excellent personal trainer, for helping me get on the podium on my 1st Sprint triathlon yesterday. It was my 2nd triathlon ever and also my 2nd time placing...you guessed it...2nd. With a time of 1:23:18, I was happy.

I had some difficulty with the swim leg, seeing as how I'd never practiced with a wet suit before. My friend Lisa chided me before the race saying the number one rule of racing is "never try anything new on race day." I'd been traveling most of the summer and just hadn't tested it out yet. I'm not sure how much of it to blame on the wet suit, but I felt short of breath and couldn't get into my usual swimming rhythm.

The bike went great, 12.4 miles in 37:41, or a 19.8 average pace. I came in 14th out of 123 females! I finished the 3.1 mile run in 25:25, or an 8:12 pace.

So thanks to Scott, for keeping me motivated and strong!

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Ahhh summer and dry river beds again ... time to ride the river and park trails ... without snow! First up, the Assiniboine Park "Monkey" trails and what better bike to use on them than my Karate Monkey.
Popped on my helmet cam and here's a little video remix:

Connected with Brian D. a few days before on part of the same stretch and added a bit of that footage too.
Summer - sweet !
Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Swamp Donkey

I put this on the Olympia Board, but I don't think anyone's reading it.
I know someone's reading this one.

Has anyone here done the Swamp Donkey?
I'm wondering how tough the running/treking is.
I've got a potential teammate with a bum knee.

Surprisingly, its not me! My knee crapped out last year while training for the Hypothermic Half. It still wasn't great last winter. In the spring, I started taking a multi-vitamin every day on the chance that I was missing something in my diet and it has gotten progressively better!

This is of course anecdotal evidience, and I can't prove any real connection.
I thought I'd put it out there to see what others think. I'm generally not that concerned about about diet and supplements, but maybe I should be...

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

test paddle

I don't have much time this morning to post a lengthy review of my new kayak (actually purchased last fall after the snow arrived) but paddled for the 1st time yesterday but I wanted to type something up quickly. The boat is an Think Fit, and it's a bit of a hybrid between a surf ski and a K1 racing boat. As you'd expect it's fast, and a bit tippy. Actually it's no more tippy than I expected, and secondary stability isn't that bad, but the initial stability when getting into the boat is pretty rocky. It was nice to have a dock and some clean water for the 1st entry.

It is definately fast. Acceleration is way faster than any boat I've paddled before (the only limiting factor now is my stroke technique and strength) and it can maintain speed with far less effort than anything I've paddled before too. I haven't decided yet if I like the rudder. It's nice to have, but it's another thing to think about. I may try it with the rudder taken off to see what I think of the difference.

The biggest plus of all is the seat. It's a very simple, molded fiberglass seat with absolutely no adjustment (it's just molded into the hull of the boat) but wow does it feel good. Best seat I've ever been in.

Anyway, this boat won't replace my go-to Evergreen Envy which I will continue to use for most of my paddling, but it sure is cool to have the fast Fit for a little bit of variety. I can't wait to take it surfing in the waves of Lake Winnipeg.

A couple of pics are below (Tom joined me for the inaugral paddle, using my Envy. He took some video which may make it up here at some point too).

Tom getting out of the water

Scott enjoying the first 'beach' day of the season.

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Bur Oak

Well it appears that summer may finally be here (and not a moment too soon, or maybe even a few moments too late, but I won't complain today) and over the weekend Deanna, Graham, and I went out on our first Bur Oak trail ride of the season (sadly Tom and Lori couldn't make it - next time guys).

I intended to take out my helmet cam but ended up doing some bike modifications prior to the ride and didn't have time to set up the camera as well. I did snap one quick, and decidely unexciting, shot of Graham and Deanna packing up after the ride just to prove we were out there.

The ride was really good. I took my Karate Monkey, which I haven't really used on a trail ride except for some relatively brief rides thru the Assiniboine Park trails. I haven't ridden with gears out at Bur Oak in 3 years so it was interesting to have a 1x9 (as my Karate Monkey is currently set up) out there. Actually, I found that by the 2nd lap I shifted to the 'correct' gear and didn't shift again for the rest of the day. Hmmm, maybe I prefer a single speed out there. As for the 29er wheels, the jury's out. There are a couple of very brief sandy sections where the larger wheels are a huge asset, and they roll nicely over some of the roots too, but so much of the rooty section is also very twisty and it felt a little more cumbersome getting the large wheels thru the corners. The Karate Monkey is a great commuter, winter bike, and enduro racer (not that I do enduros) but for me I don't know if it's best suited to twisty sort-of-technical single track. I was also riding the bike rigid so it's tough to know what it would have felt like with some suspension. Regardless, I had a great time on the trails. And the greatest success of all: We stopped at McD's on the way home and I resisted the urge to 'go big' and ordered a junior chicken sandwich (hold the mayo), small fries, and diet coke. Not exactly the meal of champions, but better than it could have been.

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Determined not to lose pace with the younger generation I've embedded some twitter badges onto the home page of this message board (thought I'm sure all the 12-16 year olds are on to something much hipper by now). Actually, I've embedded twitter because Deanna says that she rarely has enough time to log a whole message board posting about her latest workout, but she would like to blog about what she's doing in order to keep her honest, so we thought that typing quick twitter messages after most workouts might be useful. I'm happy to add twitter badges to the homepage for any other TrainingCoop member too - just let me know, or not.

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Spring Paddle

It's been a pretty miserable spring by pretty much everyone's account, but today was beautiful (except for the unexpected storm in the late afternoon - more about that later), if still a few degrees colder than normal so Deanna and I made the most of it by finally getting the boats out on the water. Deanna had planned to take the day off of work and I booked it off of helping at the shoppe as well.

We dropped in at Beaudry Park (leaving our Jeep there and planning to return later via motorcycle to retrieve it) and headed home from there. In the 4 hours of paddling plus 1 hour of picnic we encountered the usual riverside wildlife (and a fox - first time we've seen one in the city), passed numerous houses that are most certainly out of our credit range, spotted what was either Tom or one of his fellow flying aces overhead, attracted 7 ticks between the 2 of us (not bad for this time of year) and overall had a great trip.

Retrieving the Jeep after we returned home was a little less ideal - I managed to get Deanna to the Jeep in fine condition but on the way home I got caught on my motorbike in a sudden thunder storm with 90 km/h winds. I made it home wet and cold but in one piece, and managed to keep the bike upright the whole way. All's well that ends well, or at least without injury.

Who's up for doing this with us next time? Here's a slideshow to entice you:

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Best workout EVER!

Scott gave me a hill run workout on a treadmill today and it was awesome! This is my new favourite travel workout (since I fear I will not like it so much once I'm off the treadmill and on a real hill at home). Felt super athletic on max incline - and when I got off the treadmill at the end there was a pile of rubber on the floor behind the belt. I'm telling myself it was because I worked so hard the treadmill couldn't keep up

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

This is my first week back training after a lengthy sabbatical caused by an excessive workload over the past month and a half. Thinking back, I'm already second guessing whether or not I couldn't have gotten even just a few workouts in... but no. It was insane.
I'm in Las Vegas at a conference this week, but Scott and I worked out 'together' yesterday, coordinating our workout times across time zones so that we were in the gym - albeit separated by miles and miles - at the same time.
OK, so it wasn't the same as really working out together - but it was something. With my lack of working out lately, we haven't worked out together in a long time and I've missed it. Soon I'll be home (tomorrow ) for a real together workout!

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

great workout

Thought I'd type a quick post to say that I just finished a great workout. Sometimes you can't figure out quite why a workout felt particularly good (I haven't changed anything up recently, I had a somewhat 'regular' day, and so on) but it just really felt good. There's a UFC knockout special marathon on tonight so I turned the TV in the workout room on and watched guys pummel each other as I did chest, back, and ab work. The ab workout, reclining or 'extended' sit-ups on our fitness tree with two 15 lb dumbells that I extend or punch into the air and across the body when my abs are fully contracted, were really hard but really good tonight. The idea is to work the obliques with the cross-body punches - sometimes I feel like I've got good form and other times it just doesn't seem to click. Tonight it really clicked and I anticipate feeling the obliques burn tomorrow. Good stuff.

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Wow, I think I found my new dream bike. Not that I need any more bikes (though that's never stopped me in the past), but still...

Here's a pic of the beautifully polished stainless steel tubing and the seat stay integrated seat post clamp, and following is a link to the related article and some more pics:

Here's the link to the article and more pics: http://velonews.com/article/92005/cinelli-introduces-its-columbus-xcr-stainless-steel-road

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Welcome Surly Karate Monkey

Ok, there are two facts that were recently reconfirmed for me:
1. Lori is awesome!
2. I am spoiled (by her)!

When I got back from a recent trip away, Lori told me to check out the living room ... what do I find? ...

This sweet 29-er Surly Karate Monkey bike that I had been eyeing up covetously at Olympia since mid winter ... especially after comparing riding "notes" with Scott about his own Karate Monkey bike (after having the air shock seals and hydraulic brake lines fail on my Giant dualie, that I rode all through the winter)!

Lori had secretly put it on layaway and had been paying it off at Olympia since my first interest in it (all the while supposedly 'ignoring' my hints about the winter riding merits of the Karate Monkey) ... sneaky ... and great!!

Thanks Lori !

The Karate Monkey's super-solid rigid frame will never have shock issues in the frigid cold ...

It's uber-wide forks allow for fatty tires and the cable disc brakes will never fail due to the cold ...

Of course I was got out riding my new steed the next day and called up Scott to join me with his own Karate Monkey. He had been in on the behind-the-scenes deal Lori got on my bike at Olympia. In fact, he was the one who tipped me off to the bike, which fit me perfectly and was kitted out just right for all-year use. Thanks Scott!

Yup, I love my new bike and just happened to capture that in the above pic from a recent long trail ride.
*Notice the new Surly wool riding cap ... a gift from Scott & Deanna (thanks!) ... like I said ... I'm spoiled!

Welcome Surly Karate Monkey!
Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board
