Road / CX Participation Series

I just posted this on the Olympia blog but I thought it was worth pasting here as well. To fulfill our personal pledge to donate half of what I earn thru maintaining the Olympia site to local cycling endeavors Deanna and I have offered a $1000 custom wheel set to the great list of participation series prizes being awarded for participation in road and cyclocross races this year. Other individuals have stepped up by donating generous time and/or money as well like Dave Pitcher, Gary Sewell, Hal Loewen, and more (sorry if I've missed someone). For a relatively small local race scene we have a good number of folks who are willing to selflessly help make things happen and this participation series is just the latest example:

Did you know that there are thousands of $'s worth of participation prizes to be awarded for both road and cyclocross disciplines this year? Local cycling racer, organizer and enthusiast Gary Sewell, with the help of many individual and corporate donations, put together a participation points system and stellar prize package for road and cyclocross races this year and prizes will be presented this coming Saturday, Nov 28th.

All you had to do to be eligible to win participation prizes was participate in enough events this year. You could finish first or last, race with a full MCA license in any category, on a $600 or a $5000 bike...whatever the case you'd still be eligible to have your name drawn for one of many superb prizes including a $500 Sugoi wardrobe, gift certificates of up to $600, a custom wheel set valued at over $1000, Shimano RS-80 wheels, a private box for Manitoba Moose games, and much more!

If you missed out on things this year because you did not participate in enough events there is no need to worry - the participation series will be back bigger and better next year, and it may extend to mountain biking as well. Stay tuned for details, and check out the link below for more info on prizes this year:

Home of The 2009 Shimano Road Participation Series & The 2009 MCA Cyclocross Participation Series

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

B'Day, Biking, Bravado, BBQ & Beer [:-)

How awesome is it these days in Winnipeg for us cyclists!? Is it actually almost December? Maybe global warming is finally going to kick in for us up north, eh!

Last night was a great night to be a Winnipeg biker with biking friends who like to get together to celebrate (Graham W's B'Day), bike race (sort of!) for 6 hrs (kind of!), with lots of heckling/bravado (oh yah!), while enjoying food (chili/dogs with the FGBC/RRR gang and birthday desserts) and refreshments (beer - beer -beer EH!).

Awesome ... last night was the description of it!

6 Hrs of Vimy Ridge ... perfect name for a battle between two rival forces, plus a third upstart (Dallas "I'm gonna ride for 6 hrs for honor and glory - if I feel like it' S.) and held at a site very fitting site for the drama and sport!

But first, it was time for me to suit up in my brand-new wool FGBC jersey ... stylin' and comfy!

I wasn't able to show up til 6 and by then the laps raced was approaching 50 per team (an early milestone ... that became almost the pinnacle?!) and Dallas was just bowing out after fighting a dwindling solo battle (takes more than one 'Olympian' to change the course of this rival challenge!).

All were in good spirits and gratefully accepted my 'hand-ups' of the sweet dark elixir!

The relay bike-swapping was becoming a slick thing by then ... for most that is ;-)

Apparently the Dark Side had snatched a slim lead over RRRacing after 'The Impaler' had a little chain trouble and 'The Cricket' discovered how to sprint out of the saddle during almost all of his laps to overcome saddle height issues!

But RRR was still fighting the good fight ... I watched Mike, Michele, Brad and KK wiping around the circuit at great speed ... actually KK was having a bit too much fun ...

KK just kept on racing past the 3 lap max per turn rule ... who can really blame him - he has been slacking for several month recently!

I got in some laps of my own after the 'race to 50' was over and we had reclined to Chris's place for chili and dogs. Of course my first lap included taking the 'hidden steps' in the dark at full speed, my first 'old-school front endo' recovery and a few pop-up pedestrian obstacles ... awesome fun!

..............................................................................................................................................................
Next up ... Lori and I headed over to Graham's surprise birthday party with fellow TrgCoop-ers, his family and friends.

Rhonda had set up a slick layout of dessert food and a bike theme everywhere ... good for me (I still had my FGBC jersey on).

So Graham is now the big 3 0 ... young buck!

Rhonda had a 'Graham Trivia Quiz' for us that included a bunch of biking related questions ... here's a few for you to guess at (I'll spare him any personal ones from his childhood ... that we now have for future heckling use!):
1. How many bikes has Graham owned? ___ (more than you think!)
2. What color are the cables on his mtb? ___ (look above!)
3. What vintage retro CX bike does he own? ___ (think 70s!)
4. Where did he have a bike stolen from? ___ (the RRR gang didn't do it!)
5. He's watched 2 World Cup MTB races in person - where? _________ (Oh Canada!)
...............................................................................................................................................................

I didn't get back to 6 Hrs of Vimy Ridge hangout until 10-ish, but was ready to join the continuing race laps if required ... hmm - nope! ... everyone was gathered around Chris's backyard fire pit ... excellent!

A mesmerizing warm fire, hot dogs, marshmellows, beer and tales of biking exploits and future epic awesomeness ... what's not to like? That is besides G's poor aim with wood resupply and KK sneaking off to get try to up his sides lap total!

Awesome night of fun and hospitality ... thanks Chris & Rhonda. !

Later November and no snow ... oh yah !

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

elite athlete advantages

I stumbled across an interesting article this morning while surfing the net (btw, I also recently was informed that saying I'm 'surfing' the net shows my age - appearantly kids are not using this term) that just touches on the issue of what is and is not performance enhancing in relation to high performance competative athletes. For no particular reason I've thought recently about the subject and wondered if things are as black and white as we'd like them to be. For sure if a competitor uses a substance that is banned that's just plain cheating. Well actually even that can get muddled in gray areas where the athlete says, for instance, that everyone including his sanctioning organization is privately condoning banned performance enhancing drugs while publicly condeming them, so he's effectively being told doing the drugs is both right and wrong at the same time, and the resulting message has more to do with not getting caught.

That whole barrel of monkeys aside I've thought about how elite athletes are obviously born with enherent physical advantages over others and in this day and age they then further enhance those advantages through specialized training, nutrition, all sorts of legal suppliments, and a meriad of other techniques available only to the previlaged. I caught a glimpes of this in my track and field days when we took things like caffiene and dextrosol pills to push thru hard workouts with a burst of additional energy, had various machines hooked up to our bodies to record various matrices and to tell us how to improve further based on our particular physical make-up, and so on. At some point I felt a bit like what was deemed an illegal enhancement vs. a legal enhancement seemed somewhat arbitrary.

At any rate, I'm not really trying to draw a conclusion here, nor is the article below, but it was an interesting, quick read:

Taken from Christopher Wanjek
LiveScience's Bad Medicine Columnist
LiveScience.com christopher Wanjek
livescience's Bad Medicine Columnist
livescience.com Wed Nov 18, 4:35 am ET

While the debate continues over whether Caster Semenya, the 18-year-old South African track sensation who blew away the field and took the gold in the women's 800-meter in Berlin in August, is a man or a woman, we soon must confront an even more complex issue: Are elite athlete humans or androids?

International Association of Athletics Federations will decide Semenya's fate later this week as it announces the result of her gender test. Semenya will no longer be able to compete as a female if the association rules that a hormonal imbalance resulting from alleged intersexuality offers her an unfair advantage.

But if a little extra testosterone is a problem, what then do we do about the myriad performance-enhancing drugs and devises that athletes experiment with to go just a little longer, faster or higher?

Such is the topic of two new books from Johns Hopkins University Press, "The Price of Perfection," by Maxwell Mehlman, and "Performance-Enhancing Technologies in Sports," edited by Thomas Murray, Karen Maschke and Angela Wasunna.

Relative unfair advantage

Semenya's provocative case can provide a foundation for what is perceived as an unfair advantage. All top athletes, after all, have an advantage over non-athletes. They're bigger, stronger or faster. That's why they are athletes.

Lance Armstrong allegedly has unusually long femur bones for his height, which gives him better leverage when he pedals. Michael Phelps has a proportionally longer wingspan and size-14 feet that bend at the ankle 15 degrees more than most people, turning his feet into flippers. I'm a skinny freak who can't swim. Is that fair?

What, then, does Semenya have that other women don't have? To what degree do elite female athletes have male characteristics in terms of hormone balance and the distribution of muscle fiber and mass? And where do you draw the line?

I, Robot

If the sex topic isn't complicated enough, let's move on to where most athletes have been moving for sometime - to the realm of superhuman and robotic capabilities through biological, chemical and technological enhancement.

According to Melman in "Price of Perfection," most people today, if they chose, can improve their eyesight beyond 20/20 perfection through surgery; improve concentration and memory through various drugs; increase muscle mass by at least 40 percent through various chemical concoctions; and surgically reshape their body beyond recognition.

While this might sound like a vain pursuit, the impetus for such technology has been to make people healthier. Who could criticize a procedure to enable a blind person to see or a person with dementia or depression to think more clearly, for example?

Similarly, in the near future, most people will be able to alter their body at a genetic level. One goal in medicine is to make treatments more personalized, and this will entail altering the genetic constitution of your body to cure cancer, heart disease, diabetes and the scores of other chronic conditions that shorten lives.

So, when does this good technology cross the line? Should LASIK be banned for the athlete wanting an unfair advantage to see more clearly?

Super-conditioning a reality

As relayed in "Performance-Enhancing Technologies in Sports," there's trouble on the horizon. Barry Bonds and steroids is just the tip of the iceberg. The technologies mentioned in Melman's book - such as bionic body parts, chemical supplements, genetic "doping" and privileged access to equipment and training facilities - will be so pervasive that governing sports bodies will be unable to agree on what constitutes natural and fair.

In a series of essays written by academics, many of whom were elite athletes, "Performance-Enhancing Technologies in Sports" examines the nature and history of competition and the world of the athlete, from trainers and doctors to the sponsors and even governments who control their fate. The editors hope that their frank presentation of the issues from various perspectives will inspire intelligent discussion about the radical changes in sports upon us now.

Both books delve into the complexity of the performance-enhancement topic with athletic dexterity, and the depth of issues will surely leave your head spinning. But if you're genetically inferior like me and are prone to vertigo, there's medicine for that now.

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Late Fall Bike Ride with Brian - Video

I thought my plans for a ride this past Saturday with Brian D. were snookered when I got called in to fly short-notice to cover for a flu-sick pilot (H1N1?), but as it was the training flight was short. By mid afternoon I was geared up, Brian had arrived with his mtb and some of the late fall chill was warmed up. I was dealing with a little cold myself, but I thought a spin would be good prep for the CX Provs the next day ... silly me!

No snow, but it felt like snow was in the moist air of a brisk NW breeze. Funny time of the year for riding ... not frigid, but the body is just acclimatizing to the cooler temps and the moist air makes it feel colder. I find myself 'looking forward' to the dry cold of winter!?

Rode through Woodhaven Park, where Hal was conceiving his cunning race route plan for the CX Provs ... gotta love that "Whorl"! Simple ride through Ass Park, Forest, to Fort Whyte and back.

Check out my latest vid:
Late Fall Bike Ride with Brian - 31 Oct 09

Good riding, good chatting ... good times!

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

We've posted earlier on Deanna's summer photoshoot at evestudios.ca but I didn't get around to putting together a quick little slideshow of some choice shots until now. Of course we already have the two large posters that resulted from the shoot hung in the gym, but below are additional shots, some sporty, others not as much, but all good:

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

5 year old body builder

I'm not sure what I think about this (I mean that literally - I don't know what to think, good or bad) but I stumbled across a brief video this morning of a 5 year old body builder. He's actually surprisingly cut, though much of that would have to do with the crazy-low body fat. I was struck by his delts though. BTW, what's with the news anchor's snide remark about body builders saying it takes years of work for them to look like they do? What's under the shirt of yours there body? My guess is nothing

http://gmy.news.yahoo.com/vid/16297552/

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Whittier Park CrossTastic race

Well I didn't really intend to go and watch the CrossTastic race yesterday because I wanted to get my own ride in (and the race season has progressed too far for me to rationalize paying for a license at this point) so I headed off to the Assiniboine Forrest on my Karate Monkey around the same time instead. The trail conditions had other plans though - the ground was so slick with greasy mud that trail riding was pretty much pointless, so I got back on the road and figured I'd ride to Whittier park to see what was going on.

When I arrived the b race had already begun but I managed to ride a lap of the course beside the taped off competitor's route just to check it out. Not my kind of course. I'm not knocking it at all (kudo's to Gary Sewell and many others for another great event) but lots of long stretches and corners that you can carry tons of speed into is exactly the kind of course that kills me. From a spectating perspective though it was the greatest race even because as far as I can recall it's the only one I've been too locally that offered free hotdogs, chips, etc., to anyone! Mmmm, good.

I didn't come prepared to take pics and had almost no power in my blackberry so I could only snap one shot of Graham before my battery entered the red zone, so here it is:

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Jessica Watson - an inspiration

I don't know how many people in this hemisphere have been following the story, but I've been tracking Jessica Watson's attempt to become the youngest person (at age 16) to circumnavigate the globe by sailboat since I stumbled across an article on her a couple of months ago. She actually only set sail on the weekend after months of prep. There's been some controversy about someone as young as her being allowed to make such an attempt but for my part she seems prepared, skilled, and experienced, and I applaud her attempt.

Though the sort of boating I do is very different, and the scale can't even be compared, I think there are some parallels. For one I find that every time I hit the water for a paddle I'm confronted with an unexpected, absolutely breathtakingly beautiful moment in nature. Sometimes it's a fish that suddenly jumps over the bow of my boat or a huge blue heron that glides through the air just feet away from me, other times it's the morning fog lifting from a glassy lake or a hidden white sand beach that appears around a coastline corner. In yesterday's entry on Jessica's blog she described an unbelievable scene, which I've pasted below. To go directly to her website you can click here (from her site you can find a link to her blog). The entry inspired me to plan a final paddling day trip to Lake of the Woods this weekend. Can't wait...

"Blues and Pinks"

Today's been a quiet one out here. For a while again this afternoon we were completely becalmed again. I expected that it would frustrate me making so little progress but I really enjoyed the chance just to take it easy and start on a book between tweaking the sails. It's been so long since I've had anytime just to take it easy for a while and the freedom was amazing. No deadlines, nothing to rush off to, I can eat whatever I like whenever I like, no one to send me off to bed! It was pretty special this afternoon when the sea glassed right out, it was as if you could see right to the distant blue bottom apart from huge schools of jelly fish floating past. We even had a couple of dolphins drop in to say hi. The other unexpected visitor was a small plane who circled around overhead, just when I thought I was finally by myself!
I've already discovered that a tidy cabin means a happy Jessica. I can only relax when everything on deck, in the cockpit and down below is in its place and ready for the unexpected. Right now the sun's setting and the sky's turned a shade of pink, exactly the same as Ella's Pink Lady , very pretty! So I might get the camera out before finding something to eat (I'm thinking sweet and sour lamb and then pancakes), getting Ella's Pink Lady ready for the night, then calling in for evening skeds.

Jesse

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Wpg Bike Shorts Film Festival - My Video Submission

Well I finally got it done ... as requested by organizers of the Winnipeg Bike Shorts Film Festival (20 Oct at the Cinemathique), I made a new biking video remix that they will be playing at the festival ... cool - yes ... scary - yes!

I'm glad I took the time to put this video together though rather than just giving them one of my previous ... I had fun making this one and I think it captures biking in Winnipeg in all seasons and conditions ... therefore the song choice and title:

Biking Winnipeg - Under The Same Sun:

Cameo appearance of Scott and lots of Lori (of course!).

Enjoy!

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Altona CX race

Earlier this week I was actually thinking of 'racing' in Altona (for real) in part because you don't need an MCA license to race it and I haven't purchased one this year, and as the calendar gets shorter and shorter it's becoming less and less appealing for me to spend the money on one, but instead I decided to enjoy a nice motorcycle ride down the Altona to spectate. I took some pics of the A race but they didn`t all turn out - I discoverd that if I use the zoom on my bberry the pics suck. So, if you`re looking at these pics and there are none of you I`m sorry. I tried to get a pic of everyone racing but I`ve only posted the ones that turned out. Here they are:

Kudo`s to everyone involved in putting on the event. It again looked like a definate highlight of the cross season. Congrats also to Graham who looked like he had a pretty good race out there. Must be the bike.

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board

Half Marathon PR

Hey all, I haven't been on here much but Mark keeps me up to date on all your paddling, cycling, and gel-patching escapades. I'm always thoroughly impressed and inspired.

I just emailed Scott about training and realized I had forgotten to tell him about my Thanksgiving half marathon! So here's a little Twitter-style race re-cap from my Ottawa Fall Colours Marathon on Sunday:

Chilly morning, wind whipping the last vibrant leaves from the trees. Bright sunshine over a rolling course. Raced with two friends from Kingston, ON, and we all achieved personal bests: My goal was to break 2 hours, and I finished in 1:51:35, at an 8:30 min/mile pace. Previous best? 2:15:00.

I love that this whole site is basically devoted to shameless self-promotion. It assuages some of the guilt from doing the same on other (lazier) social networks! The whole shebang of pics, including ones of our friends, is on Flickr if you're bored. I'm in a white shirt and sunglasses: http://www.flickr.com/photos/westcoasthurrah/sets/72157622578377244/

Jen

Forum: TheTrainingCoop.com Main Board
